Launch of publication “Developing professional identity in multi-professional teams” by the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges

AAPE UK have contributed to the development of this guidance publication:  Developing professional identity in multi-professional teamshttps://www.aomrc.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Developing_professional_identity_in_multi-professional_teams_0520.pdf

The project began prior to the pandemic but they have decided to release the guidance now to help inform discussions about the restoration and resetting of services, since many of the messages about multi-professional team-working seemed especially pertinent.

Given the timescales and the range of stakeholders involved they didn’t carry out a full consultation prior to publication but are very grateful for the comments and suggestions received along the way. They have cited those who contributed their time and expertise in the report’s Acknowledgements.

Their Chair, Professor Carrie MacEwen, has also produced an accompanying blog post: https://www.aomrc.org.uk/blog/carrie-macewen-blogpost-may-2020/

ICN launches new Guidance on Advanced Practice Nursing 2020

AAPE UK are delighted to note the publication of this ICN report.  This captures key thinking and makes recommendations to inform and influence global development and consolidation of advanced nursing across all settings and health care systems.

AAPE UK contributed to the analysis and deliberations that informed this work.  While the UK context is now multiprofessional, the contents of this publication still has relevance to the four countries of the UK and advanced clinical practice within other professions beyond nursing.

We are delighted to announce the following results from the recent postal voting for the 6 available AAPE UK Committee places:

  • Ruth Pearce (Nottingham) returning to committee
  • Anna Neary (UWE) returning to the committee
  • Donna McConnell (Ulster) returning to the committee
  • Martin Galligan (Royal Marsden School) joining the committee
  • Daniel Monk (Northumbria) joining the committee
  • Diane Reid (Manchester Metropolitan) joining the committee

They will have a 3 year tenure.   This means that we now have a full Committee with 16 members including representatives from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

We particularly welcome Martin, Daniel and Diane as new members to the Committee.

AAPE UK participation in AfroPHC (African forum for Primary Health Care) including Advanced Practice

Annabella Gloster participated in a webinar on Tuesday 18th February 2020 and has provided this summary for those of you who want to know more:

“Bongi Sibanda has been working collaboratively with AfroPHC (African forum for primary health care) to bring together leaders of PHC teams to support each in other developments and including the Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) role.

Bongi is an educator, healthcare consultant & Advanced Nurse Practitioner with special interests in Interprofessional Education/Collaborative Practice (IPECP) and Health Policy.

AfroPHC delivers regular webinars, discussion group forums, and has a link with the leaders of PHC teams in each country.

They are hosting their inaugural conference this year in Johannesburg 19-21st June 2020. The Africa APN Regional Symposium will be held on the 18th of June 2020 at the same venue.

In collaboration with the Anglophone Africa APN Coalition, which has been the work Bongi has been involved in (2017-2020) (AAAPNC) there are now combined efforts by individual countries to introduce APN roles.

They have had involvement of many organisations to establish this work such as from ICN, ICN APN network, WHO, AANP, AfrIPEN and many others.

Their vision is to advocate and coordinate policy for APN nursing in Africa and they have adapted the Consensus Model for APRN Regulation (2008) within the African context to do this. They are considering developing an Afrocentric model (future research) as the model used was developed in the USA. The Conceptual Policy Framework for Advanced Practice Nursing (Schober et al 2016) was applied to guide the Anglophone Africa APN Coalition work.

Their initial work is looking at nurse anaesthetists, nurse practitioners, advanced practice midwives and clinical nurse specialist.

The leadership pillar must take into account policy development / advocacy as a core area for APN’s in Africa.”

If you want to keep abreast of the work take a look at their website www.AfroPHC.org and @AfricaAPN

Key report from Council for Deans Health includes important results for Advanced Clinical Practice education

In January 2020, the Council of Deans Health published their analysis of the Council’s academic staffing census 2019.

This identified a theme related to challenges for Universities who are delivering Advanced Clinical Practice programmes for sustained provision and expanding capacity.

This will have been circulated to your Deans and Heads of School but it is important that you also see this too, along with the recommendations.

Chair Katrina Maclaine has discussed the conclusions with Fleur Neilsen at the the Council of Deans Health.  We are considering strategies to ensure that the issues highlighted in this report remain at the forefront of discussions regarding the current and future workforce in the higher education sector.

New Advanced Clinical Practice standard for Nurses working in General Practice launched this month

AAPE UK are delighted to note the launch of this important publication which articulates the scope and level of practice that should be expected from Advanced Nurse Practitioners working in General Practice.

AAPE UK participated in the Steering Group that worked with Skills for Health to produce this standard.

This is now being used as a spring-board for work to develop standards for Advanced Clinical Practitioners of all professions within the primary care context.
