Regulation of Advanced Practice: NMC Round Table July 2010 – Thursday, August 05, 2010

AAPE Members attend the NMC Round Table July 28th 2010

The topic of this round table will be the regulation of advanced nursing practice (ANP).

The NMC has recently commissioned an external consultant, Abigail Masterson, to do a literature and policy review related to the regulation of advanced practice in nursing and midwifery. The review is intended to inform and provide context to the following questions:
  • What are the perceived risks to the public of advanced practice in nursing and midwifery?
  • To what extent (if any) is advanced practice covered by existing regulatory measures?
  • What would be the added value of specific regulation for advanced practice?
This research will also enable the NMC to take an informed decision about our role in this area.

The Prime Ministers Commission on the future of Nursing and Midwifery – Thursday, March 11, 2010

The Report Recommends:

“The Nursing and Midwifery Council must regulate advanced nursing practice, ensuring that advanced practitioners are recorded as such on the register and have the required competencies. Stakeholders must also consider how to reduce and standardize the proliferation of roles and job titles in nursing.”
The NMC Responds:
“The NMC will be establishing a project group to examine the basic competencies required of someone practising at an advanced level in order to protect the public. The group will be seeking to learn the views of stakeholders and the lessons from how other countries, such as Australia and the USA, already regulate advanced nursing practice. ”
