University of Southampton
Helen Rushforth is Senior Lecturer and Programme Lead, MSc Advanced Clinical Practice at the University of Southampton. After a clinical career largely focused in paediatrics, it was the opportunity to complete a PhD exploring nurse led pre-operative assessment that led her into the world of Advanced Practice. She then completed further post doctoral research in Advanced Practice before being asked to lead the MSc Advanced Clinical Practice programme in Southampton, which she has overseen since 2008. She regularly undertakes the role of Education Advisor/Examiner with colleagues in other Universities, supporting them in the development and delivery of their Advanced Practice curricula. She is an active member of the Wessex Advanced Practice Network. She is currently working with Health Education England (Wessex) and Bournemouth University on a project which is supporting the professional development of experienced Advanced Clinical Practitioners who are seeking to demonstrate the ‘equivalence’ of their education and experience to their more traditionally MSc ACP educated peers. Nationally she was involved in the development of the ACP apprenticeship ‘End Point Assessment’, and is currently a member of the Council of Deans Advanced Clinical Practice Steering Group, and various linked working parties, as one of the HEI representatives
